ABB Robotics: The world’s first robot-painted art car
Most technology launches come with a challenge. How do you explain a genuinely complex innovation in a way people immediately understand?
For ABB Robotics, the answer involved an eight-year-old artist, a flood-damaged Volkswagen SUV and a robot capable of painting designs that would be almost impossible to recreate by hand.

ABB asked loop to support the launch of PixelPaint, a breakthrough robotic painting system that allows car manufacturers to apply intricate, multi-coloured designs with extraordinary speed and precision.
The technology itself was remarkable. Using more than 1,000 nozzles, PixelPaint could reproduce complex artwork directly onto a vehicle while dramatically reducing paint waste, cutting production costs and significantly shortening manufacturing times.
The challenge was making sure those benefits didn’t get lost behind the spectacle.
Working as part of a multi-agency team, we helped create a launch programme built around the world’s first robot-painted art car. Using original artwork by child prodigy Advait Kolarkar, PixelPaint transformed a standard vehicle into a moving canvas, creating a visual story that immediately captured attention across international media.

But while the artwork generated headlines, we developed a parallel story for automotive, manufacturing and business audiences. Beyond the paint splashes and photo opportunities was a serious innovation with the potential to halve production times, reduce paint shop costs and give manufacturers new opportunities for vehicle personalisation.
The result was a campaign that worked on two levels. For consumer audiences, it showcased a robot doing something nobody had seen before. For industry audiences, it demonstrated why PixelPaint could fundamentally change the way vehicles are painted.
Not every technology launch gets to involve a robot painting a car. When one does, it pays to make sure people remember the technology as well as the artwork.
