MAHLE Powertrain: Turning advanced engineering into stories people want to read
Hydrogen combustion. Ammonia fuel. Printed-circuit-board fuel cells. An electric police motorcycle with a hole through the middle. And a quad-turbo V12 developing enough power to make 1,000 horsepower sound a little underwhelming.
MAHLE Powertrain has never been short of a story. The challenge is telling it without requiring the reader to bring an engineering degree.
loop worked as an extension of the MAHLE Powertrain communications team, helping turn complex research, closely guarded development programmes, and conversations with some extremely clever engineers into stories that journalists could understand, trust and use.
That often began with finding the simple idea inside the complicated one. With Bramble Energy, it meant explaining how fuel cells built using printed-circuit-board manufacturing techniques could make hydrogen power cheaper and easier to produce. With White Motorcycle Concepts, it was the story of an electric three-wheeler for police and emergency services, made more efficient by an aerodynamic duct running straight through the bike. The technology was serious; the fact that the air went through the middle was helpfully memorable.

Other projects needed a more human route into the engineering. MAHLE Powertrain’s work with the RNLI explored how hydrogen combustion could help decarbonise lifeboats, where a heavy battery and a long wait beside a charger are not especially useful when somebody needs rescuing.
We also helped open MAHLE Powertrain’s new vehicle and battery development facilities in Northampton, bringing journalists and even the local MP inside for a proper look around. The centre can recreate Arctic cold, desert heat, tropical humidity and high-altitude conditions without anyone having to leave Northampton – convenient for the engineers, and considerably easier on the travel budget.

Beyond launches and press releases, we arranged detailed conversations between MAHLE Powertrain specialists and carefully chosen journalists. An interview with Autocar unpacked the technical reality of Euro 7 emissions regulations. Other briefings gave engineers the space to explain work that couldn’t sensibly be reduced to three bullet points and a quote approved by committee.
Some stories required delicacy for different reasons. MAHLE Powertrain often works alongside vehicle manufacturers and technology partners long before a project can be discussed publicly. We helped manage those relationships, shape announcements around what could be said and make sure every organisation involved received the right recognition.
That groundwork included the extraordinary engine developed for the Zenvo Aurora: a 6.6-litre, quad-turbocharged V12 designed to produce 1,250hp on its own and 1,800hp as part of the complete hybrid powertrain. When your engineering story involves four turbochargers and a 9,800rpm redline, the difficult part isn’t making it sound exciting. It’s remembering to explain how it works.

From hydrogen lifeboats and electric police bikes to emissions legislation and one of the most powerful road-car engines ever conceived, loop helped MAHLE Powertrain make highly technical work accessible without making it simplistic.
Because the cleverest story in the world isn’t much use if nobody understands it.
